REFUGE NOT FAVOURED

Proposal For Brooklands The Brooklands lagoon was not of sufficient value to warrant being declared a wildlife refuge, said a letter from the Internal Affairs Department received by the Waimairi County Council. This view, it was said, had been reached after an inspection by the department and the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, and discussions with the Spencerville Residents’ Association and the Forest and Bird Protection Society. “As a refuge, this area does not fulfil the necessary requirements,” the letter continued. It is only a resting place for a limited number of ducks, and there is already a refuge at the Woodend lagoon.” The Clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) said that the reply was disappointing, as the council had hoped to blend the lagoon with the general recreational area at Spencerville. The clerk was asked to discuss the question with both the Marine and Internal Affairs Departments.
