M.O.W. “Too Busy” To Move Houses

The Ministry of Works would have nothing to do with moving any of the houses to be affected by the proposed northern motorway, the District Commissioner of Works (Mr D. B. Dallas) said yesterday.

“We are too busy building roads to be concerned about house moving,” he said. Once property owners had sold to the Ministry of Works they would have no further claim or title to the houses, Mr Dallas said. Some persons might have been misled into thinking that they could still take their houses away after they had sold them to the ministry.

Houses bought outright would be offered for sale by the ministry, but would have to be removed by the buyers. Mr Dallas said there would be no objection to persons moving their houses at the expense of the department provided this was an economic alternative to outright purchase. It was unlikely that many would want to follow this course.

At present, 366 houses are likely to be affected by the motorway in the St. Albans area. The exact number has not yet been determined.
