WEST ARM DISPUTE
Meeting, But No Decision (N.Z. Press Association! INVERCARGILL, Sept. 15. A committee, with the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. W. Armstrong) as chairman, reserved its decision after meeting in Invercargill this afternoon to discuss a dispute between workers and management on the underground powerhouse contract at West Arm. The committee consisted of two representatives of management and two members of the negotiating committee of the Combined Unions’ Association at West Arm. The commisioner is expected to release his decision, which will be final, next week The dispute arose when seven carpenters employed at West Arm were given notice of dismissal by the Utah Mining and Construction Company on the ground of redundancy.
Kennedy Memorial.—Quarrymen in the Massa Carrara hills, which produced the marble for Michaelangelo's sculptures, have begun excavating 2700 tons of marble for a memorial to President Kennedy in Washington.—Rome, September 15.
