Funds To Aid Children The Murray Halberg Trust for Crippled Children's "Sportsman of the Year” 1966 dinner will be held in Christchurch on October 20. The funds raised through the dinner will be applied to the benefit of crippled children in the Canterbury area. In January, 1963, Halberg was Invited to the Sportsman of the Year dinner in Toronto. Canada—a function which is sponsored by sportswriters and sportscasters of Ontario. Halberg returned to New Zealand after this function fully convinced that a similar dinner should and could be organised in New Zealand. As a result, the Murray Halberg Trust was formed as a means by which sportsmen In New Zealand might join together to raise funds . . . "for the benefit, education or ad vancement In life of crippled children.” The New Zealand Sportsman of the Year dinner was launched In 1963. The trophy is awarded to the sportsman elected by a panel of sports journalists and commentators. The trust was fortunate in obtaining the existing Sportsman of the Year Trophy which was first awarded in 1949.
