Applications are sought from physicists who have interests in biological research fields or who work on problems of importance in the biological sciences. It is hoped that the undergraduate physics courses will be designed so that students may take subsidiary biological science units. The appointee may be expected to participate in the development of courses in biophvslcs and molecular biology. Initially, the Professor of Physics will be a member of the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Massey University was established In 1963. and is experiencing a rapid rise in student enrolments. An extensive building programme Is being Implemented, and construction Is about to commence on the first stage of the permanent science buildings. All science departments at present offer general and honours degree courses and provide appropriate courses for the applied faculties of Veterinary Science. Agricultural and Horticultural Science and Food Technology, and the above vacancies are to meet the needs of the increased rolls. Although initial emphasis has been placed on the biological sciences, the University plans to develop both the physical and the biological sciences. Since the applied faculties are all biologically-orientated and because of the range of national biological research Institutes in the area, there are unique opportunities for physical scientists who wish to work in collaboration with biological scientists or initiate investigations in the pure and applied biological sciences. ’n close proximity to the University are the D.S‘.R. Divisions of Grasslands, Plant Chemistry and Plant Physiology, and in addition, the national centres for Dairy Research. Poultry Research and Pig Research. Excellent relationships exist between the University and these research organisations. and many facilities are operated either jointly or on a basis of ready accessibility. Bechman amino add analyser, bulk fermentation and freezedrying equipment, preparative and analytical ultra centrifuges, extensive facilities for controlled plant growth, and excellent provisions for all types of chromatography and electrophoresis work The existing contrelled-envlronment facilities at the Plant Physiology Division are soon to be extended Sy the installation of ■ major phytotron.
