Pirate Radio
Sir,—The “pirate" radio stations evidently incur your editorial wrath. The sole argument that impresses me is the quality of the proposed programmes. Your legal argument is a hasty motion where angels fear to tread. You imply that the essence of law is authority which is not to be avoided. What about tax avoidance and estate planning? What is the particular law you refer to, anyway? Statutory protection for State monopoly? Is “denationalisation” a taboo subject, illegal in the socialist State? You say none should be allowed ... to compel modification of the law to serve their own ends.” Who wants to modify the law? Certainly not the “pirates.” And what about the recent News Media Ownership lobbying? The test must be the over-all public good.—Yours, etc.. FODIOR. September 9, 1966.
