“The Press” In 1866
September 3 CALIGRAPHY.—Good writing being one of the most useful and indispensable accomplishments which can be obtained in a mercantile community, when a new system is brought into vogue some little notice of it is necessary. Professor Needham has been in Christchurch for the last five or six weeks, and has established class-rooms at Sydenham House, Colombo street, for the purpose of teaching writing in a given number of lessons. On visiting the class-rooms, a great many specimens will be offered for inspection which certainly ,ahow marks of a very
rapid and great improvement on the part of many pupils. Mr Needham has lately received a very highly complimentary testimonial from several . ladies and gentlemen in Christchurch who have been under his instruction during the past month; and, from the names appended, several well-known citizens must have received considerable advantage from the course of lessons. A feeling of delicacy, and the expectation that they will meet persons to whom they may be known, seems to deter some from becoming pupils, but each can, if he wishes, have a private room.
