Polo Prince In Sprint
“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH.
Polo Prince, one of the country’s best stayers, ran three furlongs brilliantly a t Woodville yesterday in the first sprint of his comeback campaign. His run was one of the features of the day’s work.
The Avondale contenders, Fleeting Moment and Samuel ran fine trials. Of those engaged at Wanganui, none impressed more than the firstleg contender, Summer Flight.
AU the fast work took place on the No. 1 grass, which was cutting out. Many of those with week-end engagements were let off with pacework. Polo Prince, ridden by his trainer, J. P. Carter, and accompanied by his tablemate. Strontian, sprinted three furlongs boldly in 37 4-ssec, a topclass run for a stayer at this stage of his preparation. Carter plans to take Polo prince along steadily, with a view to having him at concertpitch for the Manawatu and Wellington Cups. Samuel was not asked for his best in his semi-final trial for the Borough Handicap at Avondale. He worked righthanded. began at the winning post and took his time about warming up. He was timed over half a mile in 52 l-ssec. the last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Fleeting Moment, which will accompany Samuel to Auckland today, had a more serious test. He is in the Avondale Cup and his trainer, J. W. Harris. is giving him a solid preparation. Fleeting Moment, which also worked the reverse way round, covered almost a mile and a half, a mile and a quarter of it at a solid gallop. His last six furlongs took Imin 23 3-ssec, the final three in 42 2-ssec. He was accompanied by Far Cry. Fleeting Moment will run boldly if he strikes a soft track. Strong Run Summer Flight was paired with Olympian at a mile. They worked into the last seven furlongs trongly and came home in Imin 36 2-ssec, with Summer Flight obviously running better than his companion at the end of the last three in 41 2-ssec.
Summer Flight, which has rarely looked better, could be a dangerous light-weight in the big race at Wanganui on Saturday.
General Derby, under a big weight, sprinted five furlongs easily in Imin llsec, the final three in 42sec. He looks solid. Coalseam ran his last three furlongs in 42 l-ssec, with his trainer, I. Bradbury, up. He also is in good condition. Royal Red, another of Bradbury’s team, ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec, the final three in 38 2-ssec. He could be prominent at the week-end, and may be all the better for a race. David Jeff, not after time, began from the six and finished by sprinting three furlongs in 43*sec. Classic Way dashed over three
in 37sec without apparent effort. She is a fast mare, but seldom shows her best.
Well Forward
Javion, which began his work at the foot of the straight and picked up Automaton near the six, sprinted home from there in Imin 17 4-ssec, the final three in 39 2-ssec. It was good work and showed Javion forward to resume at Wanganui. Automaton may need her race in the Durie Handicap. She has missed some work recently. Terramycin seemed to be holding Dukedom and Joke
I without much trouble at the [end of five furlongs in Imin 5 13-ssec, the final three in 39 2-ssec. He has held condition well and could soon win again in his present form.
According to J. P. Carter, Kurrajong is likely to run in the Tally-Ho Steeplechase on Saturday rather than the Okehu Hurdles. He looked bright and came through last week’s race well. Assur was given easy work. So was Happy Jan, which looks improved with last week’s outing. Caplin was worked steadily. She is in hard condition and could win again when she strikes a firm track.
