Castleford, Yorkshire

Sir,—Everyone who knows them will agree with the Rev. L. Kyle that the manufacturing towns of England are extremely dingy, and it is a pity that his lines were not east in what Peter Sellers (in an inimitable skit) calls “The beauties of Bal-Ham.” Here Mr Kyle would have found whole areas of dingy little houses—most of them twostorey—and not a second-class

citizen in sight. It is only fair to add, however, that some years ago another New Zealand clergyman found himself in just such a suburban paradise, and complained bitterly that the inhabitants spent their useless lives in a relentless pursuit of the Joneses. It is so sad that we can’t please everyone.—Yours, etc., CARACTACUS. August 29, 1966.
