Trophy Soccer To Auckland
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND.
Two defensive errors In the first half cost Wellington any chance of lifting the E.F.A. Trophy, symbol of provincial soccer supremacy, from Auckland on Saturday. Auckland won by two goals to one at Newmarket Park to retain the trophy it has held for six years. Wellington began impressively and took the lead after two minutes when the right-half, G. Bilby, split the shaky Auckland defence and fired In a good shot. The Wellington side dominated play until the thirty-sixth minute when Bilby turned a free kick by R. Ormond, the Auckland centre-forward, into his own net.
The Wellington goal-keeper, P. Whiting, was caught out of position by a lob from Ormond and the ball curled Into the net. Auckland managed to preserve this 2-1 advantage until halftime and in the second half rarely looked like surrendering
