(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
A. Ball, the fiery England inside forward who cost Everton a record £llO,OOO. scored two great goals in the space of seven minutes on Saturday to help beat Liverpool, 3-1, in a clash between the Merseyside soccer giants.
Liverpool beat Everton, 1-0, in a charity shield match 14 days ago, but Everton has since acquired Ball, and on Saturday he showed his worth. His two goals in the tenth and seventeenth minutes rocked the League champions, but they pulled back a goal by T. Smith before half-time. Then A. Brown made it 3-1 for Everton with a second-half goal. Highlights of the vital Scottish League Cup games were another great win for Celtic, a last-minute defeat for Rangers, and a magnificent recovery by Motherwell. Hibernian, with a 3-2 win over Rangers, now heads its section with six points.
