TAX REVIEW BODY
Concern At Composition The Canterbury Manufacturer’s Association yesterday appointed its president (Mr C. W. Mace), immediate past president (Mr R. G. Pearce) and secretary (Mr R. T. Alston) to meet representatives of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to discuss the composition of the taxation review committee. Mr Pearce said that if the committee’s composition were widened, it would cease to be a semi-judicial body examining taxation with impartiality. Mr Mace said the association had been invited by the chamber to discuss the subject. A letter received from the secretary of the chamber (Mr P. L. Bush) said concern had been expressed by several members of the chamber at the selection of the men on the committee. The chamber had debated whether the committee should be widened to include representation from commerce industry, and farming, particularly as the committee would shape some important commercial and financial decisions. The committee at present comprises three accountants, a lawyer, an economist and a university professor.
