Beef Price Slumps
There was a slump in prices for beef on Smithfield market last week, according to the weekly report from London which has been received in Christchurch by a meat exporting firm. The report says that English, Irish and Argentinian beef declined in price by at least 8d per lb as the week progressed. The lamb trade had to struggle against a glut of beef, for which “ridiculously low prices” were taken. Argentinian chilled hinds were quoted as bringing 23d to 32d per lb c.i.f., which was 6d to fid per lb lower than in the previous week, and fores from 12d to 17d, which was 4d to 6d per lb down.
