PROVINCE’S TABLE TENNIS SUCCESS

Canterbury beat South Canterbury easily, 30-9, in the nineteenth table tennis contest between the two associations played in Christchurch on Saturday.

Its men’s teams won all 32 matches, but South Canterbury had much the better of the women’s matches, although Canterbury was without some of its leading players. Such was Canterbury’s superiority in the men’s matches that only six times did a match go to the advantage game. Although there were some interesting games, notably when H. P. Holt found difficulty in copings with the veteran F. J. O’Gorman, the Canterbury team was far too strong. However, the South Canterbury women did much better than expected. Miss N. Wilson gained a good win against Mrs J. Prisk and all the team played well. Results were:— SINGLES Men J. Armstrong beat B. J. barker, 21-6, 21-13; beat C. S. McFarlane, 21-10, 21-13. V. N. Canterbury continued its success in the junior contest, winning, 13-4. The boys won all their matches, but South Canterbury’s girls dropped only one game in five. South Canterbury had two good players in N. Butler and F. Fisher, but neither could win a match against K. Ward and J. Weir. Miss M. Butler showed good form for the South Canterbury girls’ team.
