S.L Badminton Title To Canterbury
A decisive 14-2 win by Canterbury’s division 11l side over Southland in the Skellerup Hall on Saturday night gave it the South Island trophy for the second year in succession.
The men's doubles were very keenly contested, with only six points difference in the six games played. The men's singles went to Canterbury in straight games. The women’s matches showed Canterbury’s superiority. Il lost only one singles, although two other matches went to three games. In the combined doubles, all matches were very close with three games going to setting, but Canterbury players lost only one game and emerged with four wins to give them an overall victory by 14 matches to two matches. Individual reSults, with Canterbury names first, were:— Men’s singles.—G. Ford beat .1 Folster 15-8. 15-11: E. Ogier beat B. Smith 15-3, 15-3; B. Hadlee beat J. Mayne, 15-8, 15-9: R. Serra beat R. Bone, 15-3. 15-9. Men's Doubles.—Ford and Serra lost to Smith and Bone. 15-11, 12-15. 6-15; Ogier and Hadlee beat Folster and Mayne, 12-15, 15-2, 15-11. Women's Singles.—Miss S. Dench beat Miss J. McLeod, 6-11, 11-0. 11-4: Miss S. Ching beat Miss B. McDowell, 11-6, 11-2: Miss R. Macintosh lost to Mrs H. Patterson, 6-11, 3-11; Mrs A. K Smith beat Mrs N. Allen. 11-9, 2-11, 11-8.
