People In Open

The earthquake was Turkey’s worst since 1943, when 4016 people died. It struck soon after midday on Friday when many people were in the open. Rescuers said that had it come at night when the population was indoors the death toll might have been 60.000.

The authorities estimated it would take days, perhaps weeks, to get a complete picture of the extent of death and destruction. They said hundreds of communities had been hit and there was no way of telling how many people lay buried under wreckage, or had disappeared into the open countryside in search of safety. Communications were almost totally disrupted.
