‘Political Pressure Caused Fruit Loss’

(New Zealand Press Association)

BLENHEIM, August 21

Political pressure on British consumers was, as much as anything else, the reason for the Apple and Pear Board’s loss on its export trade, the chairman of the board (Mr K. B. Longmore) said at the Marlborough provincial conference of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation.

High pressure from the top level was applied to newspapers, radio and television to have them advise the British housewife not to pay more for food, he said. This was intended to combat the ill effects of the seamen’s strike and inflation, he said. Continental prices had been

even lower than those on the British market. The board now had nothing in reserve and .its assets, although worth £3 million were all committed. The board had to go to the Government to negotiate an arrangement to tie it over until the next season, Mr Longmore said.
