Depletion Of N.I. Indigenous Forests
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 19. Indigenous forests in the North Island, were fast approaching depletion, the DirectorGeneral of Forests, Mr A. L. Poole, said today.
Mr Poole was replying to comments made by the New Zealand Timber Merchants’ Federation on the shortage of imported timber for housing and general construction. A steady reduction in the use of timber from the dwindling indigenous forests was inevitable, Mr Poole said. “We should be concerned that future generations should have some, what little there may be, of this timber.” Mr Poole said New Zealand could not be expected to afford high timber indefinitely to offset the increasing loss in production of indigenous timber.
