The England test rejects—C. Milburn and D. Underwood—embarrassed the selectors with spectacular performances yesterday on the eve of the final test against the West Indies.
The Northampton opener, Milburn, battered the Essex attack for a career-best 203 and Underwood claimed six Lancashire wickets for nine runs.
Milburn raced to a prelunch century’ in 115 minutes and then reached 200 in
four hours, hitting four sixes and 22 fours. When he was out immediately after tea Milburn and his partner, R. Prideaux. had put on 293 to beat the 40-year-old Northamptonshire firstwicket record of 243. Underwood was almost unplayable with his mediumpaced left-arm seamers and in one spell took three wickets for no runs to help dismiss Lancashire for 62. Scores: At Clacton: Northamptonshire 413'2 (C.
