CORSICAN ELECTION

Too Many Voters (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BASTIA (Corsica), Aug. 14. Police were out in force tonight at San Nicolao, northeast Corsica, to control a crowd of angry voters who claimed that a local election had been rigged. Chaos reigned at the end of polling as people ran through the town firing guns into the air and letting off firecrackers. The election was to choose a new counsellor-general for the San Nicolao canton. There were two candidates—a Socialist and a Gaullist. The trouble started when it was found that the number of voters was 294 more than the number of names on the electoral list.

Late tonight the result of the vote had not been declared. An election at San Nicolao in 1964 was declared void by the French Council of State because of irregularities.
