EMPEROR AT CEREMONY
War Ended 21 Years Ago (N.Z.P.A -Reuter—-Copyright> TOKYO, August 15. Japan today observed the twenty-first anniversary of the end of the war in the Pacific in which more than three million military and civilian Japanese lives were lost. A Government-sponsored memorial service was held in the presence of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako, the Prime Minister, Mr Eisaku Sato, and other dignitaries and nearly 5000 representatives of bereaved families.
The Emperor together with the Empress joined the people in a silent prayer at noon—the time when his taperecorded voice declared Japan’s unconditional surrender 21 years ago through a nation-wide radio network.
