FAULT IN VISCOUNT
Part Due
Next Week A replacement part for a Viscount tail assembly, found to have a crack in it, was due in Christchurch from Britain on Monday or Tuesday, said the superintendent of the National Airways Corporation engineering workshops (Mr A. J. Smaill) yesterday. He said the part left the manufacturer, the British Aircraft Corporation, by air for New Zealand on Wednesday. Mr Smaill said the crack was discovered during a routine inspection with the use of magnetic crack detection equipment at the engineering headquarters. Mr Smaill said the faulty fitting had been sent to the British Aircraft Corporation. “As there have been no previous cases of this particular trouble the manufacturers are naturally interested in it,” he said. The crack did not constitute any danger, said Mr Smaill. “It was just a small initial crack which may not even have progressed any further.” He said that checks would be made of the particular fitting on other Viscounts.
