Minister Breaks Launch Dispute

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 11. Cargo vital to the Manapouri power project began moving at 3.30 p.m. today when the tug Hustler took the first bargeful of equipment and stores this week to West Arm.

The dispute between Manapouri launchmasters and their employer broke this afternoon as a result of the intervention of the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand). Barges will continue to ply between Manapouri and West Arm in daylight hours until 5 p.m. on Sunday. By that time, agreement on

points at issue between the launchmen and the Mana-pouri-Doubtful Sound Tourist Company must be resolved to the satisfaction of the Workers’ Union.

The Minister of Labour has asked Mr N. Long, project manager of Bechtel Pacific Corporation, to investigate the dispute on his behalf. The president of the Workers’ Union (Mr W. Whitty) said at Manapouri tonight that all launch masters had been instructed to report for duty tomorrow morning.

All goods would be carried until 5 p.m. on Sunday. These included supplies for South Arm, West Arm and Deep Cove.
