“Mr Dollar”

Sir, —Decimal Currency day is July 10 next year. Until then we are going to be plagued by the moronic voice of “Mr Dollar” telling us so. It is necessary for the advance publicity and explanation of the change: but must we be subjected to American advertising methods which class the population as either children or idiots? Would not the repeated explanation of decimal currency be as effective if made in a clear, normal voice? If emphasis is needed, why not Barry Crump? “Gidday! D.C. day, etc.,” would be more acceptable to New Zealanders than the raucous sound produced by “Mr Dollar,” who should talk normally to normal people.—Yours, etc.. MR AVERAGE KIWI.August 10, 1966.
