Sir, —Mr R. A. McKay’s attack on the Alliance is very inconsistent, and why is he so frightened of a referendum being; taken, especially as he is so very certain that only a “minority” is in favour of it? Surely it is the most democratic way so far devised. The last referendum was taken on this matter 17 years ago, and resulted in a 75.5 per cent majority in favour of 6 o’clock closing. Surely people have had too much time to see the disastrous effect of alcohol on the happiness of many people and the absolute misery of others to vote for the extension of hours of drinking, especially in the hours of darkness.—Yours, etc., ■ REFERENDUM. August 10, 1966.
