Free Beer In Earthquakes

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter) TOKYO.

A hotel proprietor in central Japan has advertised a free bottle of beer for each of his guests whenever the hotel is rocked by an earthquake recording 3 on the scale. He hoped in this way to tide over the business slump caused by the “Matsuchiro earthquakes” which have been rocking the hotspring area in central Japan since last summer.

More violent quakes bring increased benefits to the guests. For scale 4 shocks, for instance, the proprietor promises a 50 per cent discount on the hotel bill, while a scale 5 shock would delete the bill altogether. The shocks referred to are quite violent. In a scale 3 earthquake (the equivalent of 5 or 6 on the international scale), the furniture would fall about the guest. Scale 4 (equivalent to 7 or 8 on the international scale) would bring the chimneys down, and scale 5 (international 9 or 10) would throw down the guests themselves.
