Soviet Seamen In Singapore

(N.X.P. A.-Reuter)

SINGAPORE.

A side-effect of better trade relations between Singapore and the Soviet Union is more shore leave for Soviet seamen whose ships call at Singapore. Singapore and the Soviet Union recently signed a trade agreement, the first of several anticipated between the island and Communist countries. After that, all 570 members of the crew of a Soviet factory ship which called at the port were allowed ashore. Previously, Russian crews were allotted only 10 or 15 shore passes.

When the 10,700-ton Slava, factory ship of several Soviet whalers, came for bunkering, fresh food and water, after an expedition to the Antarctic, the crew flocked ashore to buy perfumes, cameras and some of 100 and one items which: Singapore offers to the visitor. They competed with American tourists down famous Change Alley. The Chinese and Indian stall holders there, however, seemed just as adept at converting Malaysian dollars into roubles as into United States dollars.

New Sub-centre.—A new sub-centre of the Red Cross Society has been formed in Dunsandel. Mrs P. Bell has been elected president, the secretary is Mrs C. J. Spilllane, and the treasurer is Mrs R? W. Wright
