MEMORIAL PLANNED

Egg Hitting A Prime Minister

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.)

SYDNEY, August 2.

An egg hurled at an Australian Prime Minister nearly 50 years ago is to be immortalised in stone and bronze at Warwick, 100 miles southeast of Brisbane. The egg was thrown by a young man at the Prime Minister of the day, Mr W. M. Hughes, when he visited Warwick in November, 1917. It was the man’s protest at Hughes’s campaign for a second referendum on conscription.

He was a good shot, and the egg splattered against Mr Hughes’s hat, knocking it from his head.

The Warwick City Council has voted £l6O (New Zealand) for a memorial to the Warwick Egg, as it is popularly known. The council believes the memorial will be “a good tourist gimmick.” A local sculptor is making a plaster cast of a bowler hat with a partly broken egg splattered across the front The cast *UI be used to make a bronze memorial which will be set on a stone cairn in the dly. <
