Mayor Shot Dead In Courtroom

(N.Z. Press Association — Copyright) NEW YORK, July 31. A burly oil worker, fined on an assault charge, fatally shot the Mayor of Plentywood, Montana, and wounded a Justice of the Peace and a policeman yesterday before the wounded officer killed him with a bullet between the eyes.

The gunfight took place In the city courtroom just after Duane Falk, aged 33, of Plentywood, had been convicted of assault and fined 50 dollars.

The sheriff said Falk stood up and started shooting. The Mayor, Mr Ludvig Tande, aged 46, shot in the arm and side, staggered through a door and died on the floor of the fire department garage. Falk then wounded the Justice of the Peace, Mr William Denikas. aged about 80, who had hobbled into the courtroom on crutches, and a pol iceman, Ole Fisk, aged 59. The policeman, shot in the side, then struggled with Falk until Falk accidentally shot himself in the side. In an ensuing exchange, the police-

man shot Falk in the head. The policeman is in a serious condition in hospital, and Mr Denikas, who normally is confined to a wheelchair, is in a satisfactory condition.
