GANGS OF WHITES

Baltimore Violence

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BALTIMORE (Maryland), July 29.

Gangs of white youths listened at an anti-Negro rally to a speaker chanting “War, war, war,” then roamed violently through the Negro districts of Baltimore last night.

Eggs were thrown, rubbish tins overturned, and one Negro man was beaten up by a group of white youths. Riot police appeared to have the situation under control after about two hours, but were still standing by to guard against further trouble. The rally erupted into violence when gangs of white youths—“out to get some niggers”—surged into the Negro district. Police scuffled with a number of the white youths—mostly teen-agers—and took five of them into custody. Eight persons were arrested, including one Negro armed with a pistol blackjack and handcuffs.
