COMMANDER IN VIETNAM

Replacement To Go Soon (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 27. Lieutenant-Colonel R. H. Smith, Royal New Zealand Artillery, of Wanganui, will fly to Vietnam on Saturday to take up his appointment as force commander, replacing Lieutenant-Colonel W. C. T. Foley, Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps. Colonel Smith has recently held staff appointments in the Northern Military District and commanded Papakura camp. From 1960 to 1963 Colonel Smith commanded a company of Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, in Burnham and for two years in Malaya. Colonel W. C. T. Foley, of Auckland, has served as force commander in Saigon for two years—throughout the period of service of both the New Zealand engineer unit and 161st Battery. Colonel Foley is expected to return to New Zealand late next month.
