Fine Ski-ing At Race Opening

The 1966 Canterbury ski race season got away to an excellent start at North Canterbury Ski Club in perfect powder conditions during the week-end, and provided a high standard of performance.

Most of the top titles went to Otago skiers but, considering there has been little skiable snow until the last two weeks, the over-all standard was excellent.

There was fine powder snow on both days, for the Stainers Smith Memorial and Broken River giant slaloms, respectively. However, a number of tussocks were showing through at the gates yesterday.

P. Hubrich skied very well to win- the Stamers Smith Memorial, but lost the limelight to G. Nevell. A late entry, Nevell skied fortyfourth in the order but bombed the course to finish less than two seconds behind Hubrich in second place. Miss K. Guy did well in this mixed event to finish tenth. Youngsters Triumph The Broken River Trophy race was a triumph for two of the youngest entrants. M. Gardner gave the finest display of power skl-ing seen on either day to finish in 1:6.83 but G. A. Chance (Otago), who lost his balance several times and was on the brink of falling over, swept through to win by .2sec. P. Willie, Hubrich and C.
