Cecil Shield Retained
Marlborough retained the Cecil Shield when It beat Nelson, 19-10, after leading 13-5 at half-time in a representative Rugby match at Nelson on Saturday. Conditions were good but the football, after being full of purpose and finish in the first half, slowly deteriorated into loose scrappiness. For Marlborough, P. Clark (two), A. Sutherland and K. MarfeU scored tries and L. Spark® kicked a penalty and two conversions. N. Fitzsimmons and A. Jennings scored tries for Nelson and M. Delaney converted two. Waikato had tts fourth win in four games when it took the Coronation Shield from North Auckland, 16-13, at Hamilton. Waikato built up a winning advantage by dominating the first half which was characterised by fast moving play. The home team backs made good use of opportunities pro-
vfded by hard working forwards, At one stage Waikato led, 13-0.
Waikato’s points came from tries by D. R. Wood, W. K. McFarlane and A. Johnson, two conversions by D. Flave’l, and a penalty by J. R. Wood. For North Auckland, L. P. Haddon, S. Going and D. R. Panther scored tries, two being converted by K. Going, Thames Valley had a good win over the touring Mid-Canterbury team when it won, 28-11, at Walhl. Thames Valley led, 14-5, at half-time. It was the third defeat for the tourists in as many games on their northern tour.
For the Valley, B. Cambte, W. C. Walsh and B. N. Brown scored tries, T. E. Shaw kicked four penalties and two conversions and E. kicked a penalty. For Mid-Canterbury, J. Sampson kicked a field goal and B. Molloy scored a try which was converted by A, H.
A. Smith, who also kicked a penalty. In a scrappy game at Hastings, Hawke’s Bay beat Bush, 19-6. For Hawke’s Bay. tries were scored by F. Jones (two), P. Gaukrodger (two) and R. Hooper. P. Carney converted two. G. Humphrey kicked two penalty goals for Bush.
