DEATH IN S. AFRICA

London-born Mr Horace James Constable, for many years an honorary representative of the New Zealand Government in Johannesburg, died in hospital in Johannesburg yesterday after a short illness. He was 77. Mr Constable, who was advertising manager of the “Johannesburg Sunday Times” and the “Rand Daily Mail,” retired about 14 years ago after serving the South African Associated Newspapers for nearly 28 years. He was bom in London and came to South Africa from New Zealand in 1925 where he became news editor of the “Rand Daily Mail” before becoming advertising manager in 1931. Mr Constable began his newspaper career in New Zealand to which he emigrated from London in 1910. Before he left to come to South Africa he had been editor of the “Ashburton Guardian” in Canterbury and previously had been on the editorial staff of the “Auckland Herald.” He leaves a widow.
