RICE BOWL APPEAL
Record Amount Collected A record amount of £4235 was collected in North Canterbury for the Save the Children Fund’s annual Rice Bowl appeal, the convener of the appeal committee (Mr E. E. Booth) said yesterday. Last year £3348 was raised. Mr Booth said there was a growing publie awareness of the needs of under-privileged children in other countries. The cause was well supported by the business community, schools, community service organisations and the public. Although the appeal was held from May 27 to June 3, donations were rttn being received. It would be early next year before the national total for the appeal was known. Last year about £34,000 was raised throughout New Zealand. Mr Booth said the fund’s main responsibility was Korea where most of the money would go. It would provide for children’s food, educational and medical needs. Some assistance would also be given to Hong Kong and Jordan and £7OOO would be granted to the Nutritional Research Unit at Kampala, Uganda.
