RANGIORA EXCHANGE

Strike Delays Equipment The recent British seamen's strike is expected to delay the conversion of the Rangiora telephone exchange from manual to automatic control. The regional engineer (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said that a new building to house the automatic exchange had been completed and about one-third of the equipment had arrived. The whereabouts of the rest of the equipment was still unknown and nothing could be done until word had been received from England, he said. Mr Wilkinson said it had been planned to open the new exchange late next year or early in 1968, but this now seemed unlikely. When the work was completed, the Rangiora, Sefton, Woodend, Ohoka and Loburn exchanges would be in a freecalling zone.
