1000 DIE IN HEAT

No Relief In Sight (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 14. More than 1000 people have died in New York because of the heat-wave in the last fortnight, officials said today. They said 650 deaths in the city, last week could be blamed on the heat, which is scorching all the eastern United States. Fatalities this week would raise the total to 1000. The New York heatwave is the worst ever experienced in July. The maximum temperature yesterday was 101. In St. Louis, at least 70 deaths since Sunday have been attributed to the heat, which has topped 100 degrees for five successive days. The St. Louis coroner yesterday predicted the heatwave would kill several hundred people before it passed. “It’s like a plague,” he said. Most of the heat death victims were the ill and elderly but three infants were included in the toll in St. Loujs. The forecast: continuing heat.
