TONGARIRO CONTRACT

F.O.L. Ready For Talks (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 14. The Federation of Labour is prepared to re-open negotiations with the Italian contractors, Codelfa, on an industrial agreement for the Tongariro power scheme—without its hands tied. The president of the F.O.L. (Mr T. E. Skinner) said today that he held discussions in Wellington yesterday with a representative of Codelfa on [the possibility of re-opening I discussions. It was agreed during the talks that the F.O.L. and Codelfa had been placed in an impossible position by the Government at the earlier meetings in trying to make an agreement, he said. The original negotiations between the F.I.L. and Codelfa broke down on April 19 after the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) had intervened by letter, but at the end of May, the F.O.L. accepted assurances from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) that the letter was ian act of courtesy.
