UNLOADING WAIMEA
Completion Today The unloading of cargo from the No. 1 hold of the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Waimea, now at Lyttelton, should be completed today, after delays caused earlier in the week by chemical fumes in the ’tween-decks compartment. Six men wearing breathing equipment worked in the hold on Wednesday, and yesterday morning a further three breathing masks had arrived from Auckland, allowing three more to work the hold.
Instruments which were flown from Auckland earlier in the week were used in the hold yesterday to measure the fumes present; the readings were on the borderline for the use of masks so the men continued to wear masks. The Waimea is scheduled to sail for Timaru tomorrow.
