SCHOOL BUS PASSENGERS

Regulations Amended (N.Z. treat Association) WELLINGTON, June 30. The passenger service vehicle construction regulations were amended today, to prevent overcrowding of school transport vehicles—particularly in the case of standing children. Announcing the amendment—to come into force on January 1, 1967, the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said that it would be a new basis for determining the number of school children who might be carried on omnibuses or school buses. In future, the number of standing children in school buses will be determined on the basis of 150 square inch of clear floor area for primary school children instead of 120 square inch as in the past, and 200 square inch for each secondary school child. Children attending intermediate schools will now be regarded as secondary school children while being conveyed to and from school.
