A.N.Z.U.S. Council Supports Bombing

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, July 1. The A.N.Z.U.S. Council declared today that it recognised the military necessity for the bombing of Hanoi-Haiphong fuel installations “which played an important role in sustaining the aggression” against South Vietnam.

The A.N.Z.U.S. powers—the United States, New Zea-; land and Australia—said in a communique after two brief sessions of talks in Canberra: “The council noted that the attacks had been carried out with great precision and with all possible care to avoid civilian casualties.” Reviewing the Vietnam conflict, the communique said allied forces had “blunted” the Communist aggression. “The presence of one million Vietnamese and allied fighting men in support of the South Vietnamese Government assures that the North Vietnamese Communist regime will not succeed in imposing its dictatorship on the people of South Vietnam," it' said. , The partners said that Com-. munist aggression and at-; I tempts at subversion in South-

east Asia represented the most dangerous current threat to their security and to world peace and order. “The free nations must not and will not fail to deal effectively with Communist threats in South-east Asia,” it said. They also said they would continue to make every effort to bring about a just and lasting peace in Vietnam. Such a settlement would permit the concentration of resources on developing the area’s great potential wealth to provide a better future for Asian people. The council referred to Chinese nuclear explosions and the imminent French tests in the Pacific, and re affirmed its opposition to all atmospheric testing “in disregard of world opinion as expressed in the nuclear test ban treaty.”
