RUSK ON BOMBING

‘More Units On Way’ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, July 1. Escalation of the Vietnam war by the North Vietnamese had necessitated the United States bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong oil installations, the United States Secretary of State, Mr Dean Rusk, said today. Mr Rusk was answering questions after addressing a luncheon of the National Press Club in Canberra. He has been attending S.E.A.T.O. and A.N.Z.U.S. Council conferences in Canberra, during which the Hanoi-Haiphong raids were begun. Asked why, if the tide of the war in Vietnam had turn;ed in favour of the allies, the bombing had been necessary. Mr Rusk said that the allies now had nearly one million forces in South Vietnam to find and fight effectively the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese regulars. But this did not mean “the other side” had stopped coming. / Additional Northern Vietnamese units were on the way.

Cost of Submarines.—Britain’s Polaris submarine fleet would cost overall £370 million —about two or three per cent of the defence budget spread over 10 years, said the ! admiral in charge Vice-Admir-al Sir Hugh Mackenzie.—London, July 1.
