Rise In Ellesmere County Rate

After considering its estimates for the current financial year, the Ellesmere County Council decided, at its monthly meeting, to increase the general rate in the Ellesmere and Springs ridings and in the Southbridge county town.

There will, however, be no increase in the rate to be levied in the Leeston county town.

The reasons for the increases are the council’s desire to continue its programme of road reconstruction and sealing, and to meet

a steady advance in labour, materials and other costs. The Ellesmere riding rate will go up from Id tn the £ to Lid, an increase of 10 per cent, and the Springs riding rate from 7-8 d to Id. representing a 12J per cent rise.

Southbridge county town levy will be 2d instead of 1.875 d and the Leeston county town levy is to remain at 1.9 d.
