BILLIARDS FINAL
Yesberg To Play Simons
The highlight of the semifinal matches in the Canterbury Billiards Championships was a beautifully executed break of 90 by T. Yesberg. In his game with D. Hallum, Yesberg was steady rather than spectacular, but it was his most impressive performance in this year’s championships.
Hallum’s style is very similar to that of Yesberg, although his play lacked the other’s authority and positional aptitude. Yesberg’s claim for the 1966 championship will be disputed by E. Simons, who again gave a sound exhibition to beat H. Mason.
This year will be the fifth time the final will be decided between Yesberg and Simons. Each player has- scored two wins. Mason made an earnest endeavour to match Simons’s skill but at no stage did he appear equal to the task. He made the repeated error of attempting to score from the red ball and missing. To leave the red ball in play and in a relatively easy position when playing Simons is inviting defeat. Yesberg will be aware of this fact when he meets Simons in the final at the Returned Servicemen's Club this evening. Results, with breaks in parenthesis: T. Yesberg 500 (90, 47, 40), Hallum 402; E. Simons 500 (61, 42, 41), Mason 309.
