Checkers Gain Lead By Beating Rex A
A sparkling performance by Checkers last evening gave It a well deserved win over Rex A and top position In the women’s Indoor basketball senior competition. Other senior games lacked spectator appeal after the early match and teams to record wins were Brighton, Y Girls and Rebels. Results of games:—Checkers 32, Rex 24: Brighton 27, University 18; Y Girls 26, Stars 6; Rebels 29, Teachers’ College 20; Rangiiora a bye. Checkers v. Rex Rex took the Initiative from the outset and monopolised play with some fine defence and passing moves. Lack of accuracy with its shots at goal lost it this early advantage and first points came from Checkers after a fine goal by S. Chamberlain. Over-eager guarding by both teams resulted in many fouls and broken play, but this was quickly overcome by both sides, which settled to play fast controlled basketban. A magnificent overhead shot by H. Middlemiss, who was outstanding throughout, put Checkers further in the lead and the fine defensive rebound combination of J. Wairau and Middlemiss gave their side plenty of opportunities to control play. Rex made a more determined bid’ and from a burst of scoring by E. Young and V. Young, equalised the score, but accurate penalty shots by S. Chamberlain and a well directed lay up put Checkers back in the lead.
Well directed passes and controlled forward play kept It ahead for the rest of the game and some excellent passing moves resulted between J. Baker, Middlemiss and Chamberlain. With J. Taylor well contained on attack by Chamberlain, Rex was not enjoying its usual combination and goals were often the result of individual effort rather than team combination. Some brHllant shots were seen at times from V. Young and J. Taylor for Rex and some agrgesslve rebounding by L. Wilson Ist* in
the game offered a temporary challenge but Checkers again rose to the occasion with some more fine goals by Baker and Chamberlain.. Top scorers V. Young (Rex) 13, J. Baker, S. Chamberlain. H. Middlemiss 10. Brighton v. University In a game which failed to raise any excitement until the dying stages, Brighton beat University. Neither team showed any real combination and many passes were wide of their mark. Brighton put on some early goals with successful shots by S. Norman and B. Ross but did not look impressive at any stage. Top scorers for Brighton, S. Norman 9, B. Ross 8; for University D. Markham 6. Y Girls v. Stars The well-drilled Y Girls side was far superior to its opponent Stars, and scored a well deserved win. M. Neiman and R. Leask rebounded well to give the forwards, J. Partridge and M. Coulson, a feast of the ball. Although Stars tried hard throughout the team had little success with its shots at goal and from the resulting rebound. Y Girls quickly swung play back in their favour. Top scorer, J. Partidge (Y. Girls), 13. Rebels v. Teachers’ College The bottom teams, Rebels and Teachers’ College, were well matched and a rather more interesting; game developed. Rebels took control early with good attacking combination between B. Curry and K. Blnnfe bringing up goals, and with accurate shots by C. Cook. Always quick to the loose ball. Teachers’ College attacked hard but shots were opportunist rather than planned. Top scorers, T. Keelan (Teachers' College) 12, C. Cook (Rebels) 8.
