COMPLAINTS ABOUT DOGS
Strict Control Wanted
The council was having trouble in getting health inspectors, and it would not be possible to take on any more duties to control dogs, the bylaws committee reported to the City Council on Monday. It was commenting on a letter complaining that there was a lack of concern over the dog problem and saying that other centres such as Auckland and Nelson had adopted restraining by-laws and saw that they were enforced. "Citizens have enough to contend with in the barking of dogs in neighbours’ back yards, but public health surely demands that stringent by-Taws be established immediately and enforced,” the writer said. The council also had a complaint from the New Brighton Businessmen’s Association about the number of dogs roaming the shopping area. Not all were strays, it said.
A request for seven additional signs prohibiting dogs in the shopping area unless on a leash and the repainting of one was met by the council.
