U.S. OPEN PLAY-OFF

Palmer Is Beaten (N.Z.P.A.'Reuter —Copyright) SAN FRANCISCO. W. Casper won the United States Open golf championship by four strokes yesterday after a tense 18-hole play-off with A. Palmer. “It was an interesting week,” Casper said quietly, at the end of the play-off. Casper, sinking 25 and 35-foot putts, came from behind after Palmer had turned with a two-stroke lead. For Palmer it was a duplication of his disastrous fourth round when he whittled away a seven-stroke lead with nine holes to play. He lost his lead at the eleventh yesterday where Casper sank a 25-foot putt for a birdie. Casper went ahead at the thirteenth with a 35-foot putt. I Palmer was one over at the ’ fourteenth and fifteenth, ! missed an eight-foot putt at the sixteenth for a two-over land ended with a three-over-I par 73. 1
