Seeded Men Win, But Four Drop Sets

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. Seeded players came under pressure when the 1966 Wimbledon tennis championships began yesterday with the first round of the men’s singles.

Although the defending champion, R. Emerson (Australia) scored a 42-minute win over the Canadian, H. Fauquier, by 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, four other seeds conceded sets on the way to victory.

J. Newcombe, of Australia, seeded fifth, had the toughest battle, being taken to five sets by his compatriot, R. Ruffles. Newcombe won 6-1, 3- 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. M. Santana, of Spain, who holds the United States singles title, and is seeded fourth, had a hollow victory over I. Watanabe. Stomach Injury The little Japanese took the first set, 7-5, but was forced to retire in the second set after a stomach injury. He was trailing, 0-2, when he raced into the side canvas chasing a wide ball. He played one more game, and then retired. F. Stolle, of Australia, run-ner-up to Emerson for the last two years, conceded a set to the West German Davis Cup player, I. Buding. Stolle, seeded third, won 6-2, 6-2, 4- 6-2.

R. D. Ralston, the top-rank-ing American, yielded a set to the 18-year-old R. Lutz, the United States number one junior, who showed great potential on his Wimbledon debut. Ralston, seeded sixth, won 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Gerrard Trailing

The only men’s seed not in action yesterday was the Australian left-hander, A. Roche, who was given a 24-hour postponement of his opening match against E. Beards (Britain) because of an injured ankle.

Several matches were uncompleted, among them being the first round tie involving the New Zealand Davis Cup player, L. A. Gerrard. When bad light stopped play, Gerrard was trailing E. L. Scott (United States), 7-9, 6-6.
