FIREMAN’S SUCCESS
Associate Of U.K. Institute
A Christchurch fireman, Mr D. N. Sinclair, of Marshall street, Woolston, has become probably the youngest fireman in New Zealand to pass the examination which makes him an associated member of the Fire Engineers' Institute of Britain. Mr Sinclair, aged 26, is the station officer at the Woolston sub-branch of the Christchurch Fire Brigade. He passed the examination at his first attempt. Two examinations are involved—the first to become a graduate and the second to be an associate. Subjects covered include building construction. chemistry, hydraulics, mathematics, electricity, motor mechanics, fire prevention and laws relating to fires. Mr Sinclair, educated at Cathedral Grammar School and Christ’s College, has been a member of the Christchurch brigade for seven years. He has been a station officer at Woolston for the last 18 months. At present there are six associated members of the institute in the South Island and between 20 and 25 in the North Island.
Four firemen sat the examination in Christchurch. Station Officer M. Burke of city headquarters received a graduate pass. t
