RACING Chance For Kumai In Waimate Steeples

The southern trainers, R. J. Cochrane and I I. A. Anderton, will saddle the horses expected to dominate the finish of the Studholme Steeplechase at Waimate today.

Cochrane prepares Game Call, and the brilliant winter performer Kumai will run for the Anderton stable.

If Kumai’s jumping is fast and clean he should be able to capitalise on his superior speed and win with something to spare.

His jumping was rather slow when he ran third at the Southland autumn meeting last month, but with experience gained in the meantime, and with B. J. Anderton as his rider today, the Waimate race could mark his first win over country. Game Call is 101 b above Kumai and any advantage he might be able to gain could be his slightly longer experience in steeplechasing. He won easily over the Invercargill country before being taken north for the Wellington meeting in May. He missed a start on the first day because of an eye infection, and then fell on the second day when holding a place chance at least in a stronger field than today’s Sir Athol, a former Waimate Cup winner, should have the edge on the others for speed if, as expected, the ground is soft for the Rattray Hurdles today.

Sir Athol was a promising third over hurdles at the recent Winton meeting at Invercargill Startler, a winner at Riccarton at Easter, will be one of Sir Athol’s strongest rivals. If there is any drying in the track he could win.

The Rattray Hurdles is the first leg of the on-course double.

The Riccarton-trained White Rajah should take beating in the Waitaki Gold Cup Handicap, second leg of the oncourse double.

Red Siren and Tumble are selected for the T.A.B. double which is on the Waimate Cup and the President’s Challenge Cup. Fields:— FIRST LEG ON-COURSE DOUBLE 10.45 a.m.— RATTRAY HURDLES, £270; 13f.
